The Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service

What do I do in an Emergency?

All vets must run a 24 hour service. The following relates to clients of Practices

that subscribe to the Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service.

Q: How do I contact the Emergency Clinic?

A: Simply ring your usual vet.. After routine surgery hours, you may be transferred directly through to the Emergency Clinic, or an answer phone will give you the number of it.

Q: Can I ring for advice?

A: Certainly. The veterinary staff on call are qualified to give advice. If in doubt, they will ask the duty vet.

Q: What do I do if my pet needs to be seen?

A: Transport your pet to the V.E.T.S. clinic. The staff will be waiting to receive your pet and administer appropriate treatment.

Q: How do I get to the V.E.T.S. Clinic?

A: The clinics are centrally located, to facilitate convenient access from a wide area.. They have good car parking facilities and are sign-posted prominently.

Q: What if I don’t have transport?

A: If you don’t have access to a vehicle, V.E.T.S. carries a list of telephone numbers for taxi firms who are willing to transport animals. If necessary, your pet may be picked up by the V.E.T.S. ambulance service.

Q: What if I am unable to move my pet?

A: V.E.T.S. operates just like a human casualty unit. All the necessary life saving facilities are located there, and, just as human emergencies are transported to the casualty unit, so must pets be taken to V.E.T.S. Very little useful treatment can be carried out elsewhere. The staff at V.E.T.S. will give advice on how to move injured pets.

Q: Will I need to leave my pet?

A: If the condition is serious and requires emergency medical or surgical care, then your pet will be admitted for immediate treatment.

Q: When my pet has recovered, can I take him/her back to my usual vet?

A: Of course. Once the emergency is treated, and the patient stabilised, V.E.T.S. will contact your usual vet and fax the necessary patient records to enable him to continue any further treatment. If the pet is left at the clinic, it will be returned to your usual vet as soon as possible in normal hours.

Q: What if my pet is already receiving treatment? Will V.E.T.S. have access to his/her records?

A: Again, just as with you or I, the majority of emergencies, such as road traffic accidents, do not require case records. If your pet is receiving medication, the V.E.T.S. staff will probably ask you to bring it with you.

Q: How much does it cost?

A: A detailed quotation will be given by the reception staff. Credit and swipe cards are acceptable. Payment is made to V.E.T.S., not to your usual vet. Pet insurance covers these fees.

Q: Can anyone use V.E.T.S.?

A:No, only clients of participating practises may use the clinic, since they are the ones funding it. Non-participating vets must provide their own cover.
