A short history of V.E.T.S.

The Veterinary Emergency Treatment Service (V.E.T.S.) was launched in October 1996, supplying out-of-hours cover to practices in Cardiff, the Rhymney and the Rhondda Valleys up to and including Merthyr Tydfil. This was the first of its kind in the UK.

On May 10th 2004 we opened our second emergency clinic 12 miles north of Cardiff in the Ystrad Mynach Vet Clinic. This was designed to improve and extend our existing service to cover Newport and surrounding areas.

These two clinics were the first two emergency clinics to become officially approved by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

V.E.T.S. employs at least seven veterinary surgeons and seven veterinary nurses, (along with other ancillary staff), who cover emergency work from 6pm to 8.30am weekdays plus all hours of the weekend and all Bank Holidays. Any patients kept in for care are returned to their usual practice the next day.

The BBC have filmed three series about our practice (simply called “vets”). All three series have been aired several times.

V.E.T.S. was originally part of the Valley Veterinary Group which, in 1996, split into Valley Vets Ltd (www.valleyvets.net) and ourselves (V.E.T.S. Ltd)

The original practice was founded by Mr Derek Packer in 1949 as a single branch in Ystrad Mynach dealing mainly with the farming community in the Rhymney Valley. Mr Nick Ryland joined several years later and introduced the small animal side. The practice was then called Packer & Ryland. Mr Phil Hyde joined in 1977, becoming a partner in 1982, when it was renamed the Valley Veterinary Group. Derek retired soon after, and Nick retired in 1998.

At that time it had three branches, one in Cardiff, one in Caerphilly and one in Ystrad Mynach, dealing with all kinds of pets.

Since it’s inception, the practice has slowly grown until now there are over seventeen vets between the two practices, with over thirty nursing and support staff.

We have complete 24-hour cover, with staff on-site day and night, all year round. We have our own ambulance service with several ambulances. We have high standards of care and equipment that have developed and evolved since starting over sixteen years ago.
